lyrics:
A story from "The Histories"
A sordid tale of treachery
King said, "Servant, you'll know my queen's
Beauty that few men's eyes have seen."
King told his servant, "Hide right here.
The queen's bedtime is drawing near.
When she enters, she'll undress
Obey my orders. Don't protest."
No, Gyges, turn back while you can.
When Gyges spied upon the queen,
He hoped that he might leave unseen.
Queen soon called him, said, "I saw you.
Now, here's your choice. What will you do?
Someone will suffer for my shame.
Pick you or him, just say the name.
Then, slay my husband in his bed,
And take his throne once he is dead."
No, Gyges, turn back while you can.
So Gyges slew the king as told,
And sat upon his throne of gold.
The king's men said, "This crime won't hide.
They let the oracle decide."
The seer said, "Make Gyges king,
But that's not all his actions bring.
These seeds of treason will bring worse.
His offspring must, now, bear the curse."
No, Gyges, turn back while you can.
